I have several ideas to make a series of works. If I were to focus on something that happens in everyday life, it would be the walk down to fetch my son from school. I would walk by the park and there is this huge field in front of the library. My son would always be picking up acorns, pine cones and sticks while walking back and sometimes, he'd pick up fallen oak leaves or leaves from the huge willow tree there. So one of the series would be on nature.
Another would be the beautiful buildings here in Cambridge and Harvard. I started drawing part of the old main library as it looked like something out of Harry Potter but I wasn't able to finish it as my son's friend had gotten injured while playing tee-ball while I was drawing. Alas I got most of the building drawn except for some details.
And the last series that I have been thinking about working on are seashells. My mom loves seashells and she has a rather big collection back home. I had also viewed another artist's portfolio on seashells and she has made a beautiful collection in her portfolio. It has really inspired me to start working on seashells especially when we go to the beach for our yearly trips to visit friends in Southern Thailand.
These are great! I would definitely encourage you to work on more series. After having completed this last assignment would you approach a new series any differently? Sometimes, working this way can allow you to develop ideas more thoroughly... therefore in each piece addressing the same idea from a different perspective. In your recent series, I might argue that the different perspective in each piece was color palette. But maybe in the future you could think about other ways of developing an idea. Perhaps literal perspective could be something to explore? A few of your ideas above could all be explored from different visual viewpoints... so for instance what is your son's perspective in comparison to yours?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite idea that you mentioned above is the first. I think the idea of time in a series. What if you did a drawing representing each day or each walk? Think of what an interesting chronicling of your time with your son the series could be. I also like that it's personal. It's a series about, as you mentioned, everyday life with your son. I often suggest that artists create work that is personal to them because I believe the strongest work out there is personal.
The idea of drawing representing each day or each walk is exciting!! Thanks for the suggestion! Perhaps I can look to working on chronicling my time and the items we collect over a one month period to create the series.
ReplyDeleteAnd using literal perspective to draw nature would definitely give a more exciting feel to viewing one's work. I have ideas that I could work on, for example, what if I was looking at the world from my son's viewpoint, his height... Sort of like what would the world or objects look like from the viewpoint of an ant, or from a bird's eyeview, etc...
