Assignment (Opposites)

I got a little confused. Instead of doing 4 pages, I went on a spree and did 10 pages instead and focused on the theme 'opposites'. Had some fun and frustration working on this. Overall, I would say...it was an interesting journey. Here are my 10 pages of opposites in my sketchbook.

  1. I read your email and like that you combined the two assignments (new and old)! Either way, it's great to see you filling up your sketchbook and these are great. As I look through your images my first comment is say that I'm thrilled to see that you're not afraid to use color or experiment with how you approach a problem. I appreciate that you handled each comparison differently. At the top you used a more abstract and formal approach - geometric vs. organic shapes. Next you seemed to use paint and incorporate the words into the piece. And each piece continues to be different. In the second piece, I wonder - do these opposites represent two different places? The right image seems to refer to a land mass and the left image has a backdrop of mountains. Your color choices definitely reflect the words you chose, but is there anything you would change about this comparison? Is there a way to make them connect more visually? Even though they are opposites, I might be interesting to think of ways that they can also be connected, as if they were a diptych. Right now they seem like two very different images and don't necessarily connect like say the first and fourth drawings do.

In the leaf images, I would have loved to have seen the right image fill up the whole page. This would have allowed you to go even more into detail with your drawing and really play with the idea of scale.

The peppers vs. tomatoes are great! I like your use of watercolor and line, and also the way you incorporated text. However, it might have been interesting to think about how you could have visually described the different tastes. For instance, could you have exaggerated the color of the peppers to make them seem electric, therefore imply spice and heat?

Lastly, it's great to see your still life, however I am interested in the scale of your objects. Was it intentional to play with the idea of scale but putting the fork next to the hutch? Or was the hutch meant to sit back in space? Also, I like your use of water color but each object is pretty flat right now and lacking value. It might have been nice to see some layering of watercolor to show a light source to make your objects three dimensional. I know this may been a quick sketch, as the assignment suggested but even by leaving some parts of objects white to show light reflection, would have added a more three dimensional feeling.

Great work! Once again, it's great to hear that you are enjoying filling up your sketchbook. I hope you find my comments helpful. Please respond to them and my questions and we can continue the conversation!

  2. Perhaps I was a little overwhelmed when I embarked on this assignment. I knew that I wanted to focus on the "graphic" style that I really like. As I progressed on to the second 'opposites' I was initially more interested in playing around with collage and different media. And you are correct, I drew the land mass of my country and used warm colours to show heat. However, I was not very satisfied with the final outcome. No doubt the colours showed opposites in terms of 'cold' and 'hot' but I think there was not enough substance to strengthen the idea. Perhaps I could have used pictures or magazines cutouts of fire to show more heat as I started out with collage and paint on the left page..

The third page with the leaf was my way of showing a 'whole' leaf and a 'part' of the leaf. I did not play with scale as that was my final peice for this assignment. Although, I agree that on a larger scale, the artwork would have been magnificent. I have seen students' works blown up to possibly 7 times larger than the original object and will try that out soon enough. I realized after I posted it up on my blog that the images looked flat. There was some layering or attempt to add shading and I guess everything else was a flat tone. Will need to improve on getting shadows and highlights in.

Thank you for your very helpful and valuable comments...

The peppers and tomatoes were my best pieces. I was totally inspired by a sketchbook artist, Danny Gregory. Simply love his work and his style. No doubt, the reds could be amplified but using watercolour didnt give me much choice to electrify the spice.I could shade it a tad darker...hmmm then it will look like dried jalapenos..definitely spicy. Thanks for the heads-up. I guess I must keep remembering the whole idea of speaking through images.

For the last piece, I definitely wanted to play with scale and remember looking at Rene Margritte's surrealist works. Loved the way he played with scale in Personal Values and I wanted to show the difference in sizes between the cupboard (hutch?) and the fork. Most of the items on the right side show small items that have been scaled to fill the room whereas the ones on the left, mostly mighty machines scaled down to smaller sizes.

  3. Some parts of my comments are missing.... weird.
And my last line has been inserted into one of the earlier paragraphs.

In any case, for the last piece, the scale in sizes was definitely intentional. Will heed your advice to add shadows and highlights. It does look flat.
